PRIMERA LECTURA
No era posible que la muerte lo retuviera bajo su dominio.
Lectura del libro de los Hechos de los apóstoles 2, 14. 22-33
El día de Pentecostés, Pedro, poniéndose en pie junto a los Once, levantó su voz y con toda solemnidad declaró:
«Judíos y vecinos todos de Jerusalén, enteraos bien y escuchad atentamente mis palabras.
A Jesús el Nazareno, varón acreditado por Dios ante vosotros con los milagros, prodigios y signos que Dios realizó por medio de él, como vosotros mismos sabéis, a este, entregado conforme el plan que Dios tenía establecido y previsto, lo matasteis, clavándolo a una cruz por manos de hombres inicuos. Pero Dios lo resucitó, librándolo de los dolores de la muerte, por cuanto no era posible que ésta lo retuviera bajo su dominio, pues David dice, refiriéndose a él:
“Veía siempre al Señor delante de mi, pues está a mi derecha para que no vacile.
Por eso se me alegró el corazón, exultó mi lengua, y hasta mi carne descansará esperanzada. Porque no me abandonarás en el lugar de los muertos, ni dejarás que tu Santo experimente corrupción.
Me has enseñado senderos de vida, me saciarás de gozo con tu rostro”.
Hermanos, permitidme hablaros con franqueza: el patriarca David murió y lo enterraron, y su sepulcro está entre nosotros hasta el día de hoy. Pero como era profeta y sabía que Dios “le había jurado con juramento sentar en su trono a un descendiente suyo”, previéndolo, habló de la resurrección del Mesías cuando dijo que “no lo abandonará en el lugar de los muertos” y que “su carne no experimentará corrupción”. A este Jesús lo resucitó Dios, de lo cual todos nosotros somos testigos.
Exaltado, pues, por la diestra de Dios y habiendo recibido del Padre la promesa del Espíritu Santo, lo ha derramado. Esto es lo que estáis viendo y oyendo».

R. Señor, me enseñarás el sendero de la vida.
Protégeme, Dios mío, que me refugio en ti.
Yo digo al Señor:’«Tú eres mi Dios».
El Señor es el lote de mi heredad y mi copa;
mi suerte está en tu mano. R.
Bendeciré al Señor, que me aconseja,
hasta de noche me instruye internamente.
Tengo siempre presente al Señor,
con él a mi derecha no vacilaré. R.
Por eso se me alegra el corazón,

ni dejarás a tu fiel conocer la corrupción. R.

SEGUNDA LECTURA
Fuisteis liberados con una sangre preciosa, como la de un cordero sin mancha, Cristo.
Lectura de la primera carta del apóstol san Pedro 1, 17 – 21
Queridos hermanos:
Puesto que podéis llamar Padre al que juzga imparcialmente según las obras, de cada uno, comportaos con temor durante el tiempo de vuestra peregrinación, pues ya sabéis que fuisteis liberados de vuestra conducta inútil, heredada de vuestros padres, pero no con salgo corruptible con oro o plata, sino con una sangre preciosa, como la de un cordero sin defecto y sin mancha, Cristo, previsto ya antes de la creación del mundo y manifestado en los últimos tiempos por vosotros, que, por medio de él, creéis en Dios, que lo resucitó de entre los muertos y le dio gloria, de manera que vuestra fe y vuestra esperanza estén puestas en Dios.

EVANGELIO
Lo reconocieron al partir el pan.
Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Lucas 24, 13-35
Aquel mismo día (el primero de la semana), dos de los discípulos de Jesús iban caminando a una aldea llamada Emaús, distante de Jerusalén nos sesenta estadios; iban conversando entre ellos de todo lo que había sucedido. Mientras conversaban y discutían, Jesús en persona se acercó y se puso a caminar con ellos. Pero sus ojos no eran capaces de reconocerlo.
Él les dijo:
«¿Qué conversación es esa que traéis mientras vais de camino?».
Ellos se detuvieron con aire entristecido. Y uno de ellos, que se llamaba Cleofás, le respondió:
«¿Eres tú el único forastero en Jerusalén, que no sabes lo que ha pasado allí estos días?».
Él les dijo:
«¿Qué?».
Ellos le contestaron:
«Lo de Jesús, el Nazareno, que fue un profeta poderoso en obras y palabras, ante Dios y ante todo el pueblo; cómo lo entregaron los sumos sacerdotes y nuestros jefes para que lo condenaran a muerte, y lo crucificaron. Nosotros esperábamos que él iba a liberar a Israel, pero, con todo esto, ya estamos en el tercer día desde que esto sucedió. Es verdad que algunas mujeres de nuestro grupo nos han sobresaltado: pues habiendo ido muy de mañana al sepulcro, y no habiendo encontrado su cuerpo, vinieron diciendo que incluso habían visto una aparición de ángeles, que dicen que está vivo. Algunos de los nuestros fueron también al sepulcro y lo encontraron como habían dicho las mujeres; pero a él no lo vieron».
Entonces él les dijo:
«¡Qué necios y torpes sois para creer lo que dijeron los profetas! ¿No era necesario que el Mesías padeciera esto y entrara así en su gloria?».
Y, comenzando por Moisés y siguiendo por todos los profetas, les explicó lo que se refería a él en todas las Escrituras.
Llegaron cerca de la aldea adonde iban y él simuló que iba a seguir caminando; pero ellos lo apremiaron, diciendo:
«Quédate con nosotros, porque atardece y el día va de caída».
Y entró para quedarse con ellos. Sentado a la mesa con ellos, tomó el pan, pronunció la bendición, lo partió y se lo iba dando. A ellos se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron. Pero él desapareció de su vista.
Y se dijeron el uno al otro:
«¿No ardía nuestro corazón mientras nos hablaba por el camino y nos explicaba las Escrituras?».
Y, levantándose en aquel momento, se volvieron a Jerusalén, donde encontraron reunidos a los Once con sus compañeros, que estaban diciendo:
«Era verdad, ha resucitado el Señor y se ha aparecido a Simón»
Y ellos contaron lo que les había pasado por el camino y cómo lo habían reconocido al partir el pan.
Palabra del Señor.
PALABRAS DEL SANTO PADRE
Es un encuentro rápido, el de Jesús con los dos discípulos de Emaús. Pero en él está todo el destino de la Iglesia. Nos cuenta que la comunidad cristiana no está encerrada en una ciudadela fortificada, sino que camina en su ambiente más vital, es decir la calle. Y allí se encuentra a las personas, con sus esperanzas y sus desilusiones, a veces pesadas. La Iglesia escucha las historias de todos, como surgen del cofre de la conciencia personal; para después ofrecer la Palabra de vida, el testimonio del amor, amor fiel hasta el final. Y entonces el corazón de las personas vuelve a arder de esperanza. (AUDIENCIA GENERAL Miércoles 24 de mayo de 2017)

Probablemente de origen ateniense, Clemente, diminutivo de Anacletus, es el tercer Papa de la historia. Es el autor de la meditación en la tumba de Pedro, en el Vaticano, cerca de la cual será enterrado él mismo. Durante su Pontificado se inaugura el Coliseo en Roma.

READING OF THE DAY
First reading from the Acts of the Apostles
ACTS 2:14, 22-33
Then Peter stood up with the Eleven,
raised his voice, and proclaimed:
“You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem.
Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
You who are Israelites, hear these words.
Jesus the Nazarene was a man commended to you by God
with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs,
which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.
This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God,
you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.
But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death,
because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
For David says of him:
I saw the Lord ever before me,
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted;
my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld,
nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.
You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill me with joy in your presence.
“My brothers, one can confidently say to you
about the patriarch David that he died and was buried,
and his tomb is in our midst to this day.
But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him
that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,
he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ,
that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld
nor did his flesh see corruption.
God raised this Jesus;
of this we are all witnesses.
Exalted at the right hand of God,
he received the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father

Second reading from the first letter of Peter
1 PT 1:17-21
Beloved:
If you invoke as Father him who judges impartially
according to each one’s works,
conduct yourselves with reverence during the time of your sojourning,
realizing that you were ransomed from your futile conduct,
handed on by your ancestors,
not with perishable things like silver or gold
but with the precious blood of Christ
as of a spotless unblemished lamb.
He was known before the foundation of the world
but revealed in the final time for you,
who through him believe in God
who raised him from the dead and gave him glory,
so that your faith and hope are in God.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Luke
LK 24:13-35
That very day, the first day of the week,
two of Jesus’ disciples were going
to a village seven miles from Jerusalem called Emmaus,
and they were conversing about all the things that had occurred.
And it happened that while they were conversing and debating,
Jesus himself drew near and walked with them,
but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.
He asked them,
“What are you discussing as you walk along?”
They stopped, looking downcast.
One of them, named Cleopas, said to him in reply,
“Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem
who does not know of the things
that have taken place there in these days?”
And he replied to them, “What sort of things?”
They said to him,
“The things that happened to Jesus the Nazarene,
who was a prophet mighty in deed and word
before God and all the people,
how our chief priests and rulers both handed him over
to a sentence of death and crucified him.
But we were hoping that he would be the one to redeem Israel;
and besides all this,
it is now the third day since this took place.
Some women from our group, however, have astounded us:
they were at the tomb early in the morning
and did not find his body;
they came back and reported
that they had indeed seen a vision of angels
who announced that he was alive.
Then some of those with us went to the tomb
and found things just as the women had described,
but him they did not see.”
And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are!
How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke!
Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things
and enter into his glory?”
Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets,
he interpreted to them what referred to him
in all the Scriptures.
As they approached the village to which they were going,
he gave the impression that he was going on farther.
But they urged him, “Stay with us,
for it is nearly evening and the day is almost over.”
So he went in to stay with them.
And it happened that, while he was with them at table,
he took bread, said the blessing,
broke it, and gave it to them.
With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him,
but he vanished from their sight.
Then they said to each other,
“Were not our hearts burning within us
while he spoke to us on the way and opened the Scriptures to us?”
So they set out at once and returned to Jerusalem
where they found gathered together
the eleven and those with them who were saying,
“The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!”
Then the two recounted
what had taken place on the way
and how he was made known to them in the breaking of bread.
WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
Jesus’ encounter with the two disciples of Emmaus is a fleeting one. But the entire destiny of the Church is contained within it. It tells us that the Christian community is not enclosed within a fortified citadel, but rather journeys along its most essential environment, which is the road. And there, it encounters people with their hopes and disappointments, burdensome at times. The Church listens to everyone’s stories as they emerge from the treasure chest of personal conscience, in order to then offer the Word of Life, the witness of love, a love that is faithful until the end. And thus, the hearts of people reignite with hope. (General audience, 24 may 2017)

Lecture de la première lettre de saint Pierre Apôtre
(1 P 5, 5b-14)
Bien-aimés,
vous tous, les uns envers les autres,
prenez l’humilité comme tenue de service.
En effet,
Dieu s’oppose aux orgueilleux,
aux humbles il accorde sa grâce.
Abaissez-vous donc sous la main puissante de Dieu,
pour qu’il vous élève en temps voulu.
Déchargez-vous sur lui de tous vos soucis,
puisqu’il prend soin de vous.
Soyez sobres, veillez :
votre adversaire, le diable,
comme un lion rugissant,
rôde, cherchant qui dévorer.
Résistez-lui avec la force de la foi,
car vous savez que tous vos frères, de par le monde,
sont en butte aux mêmes souffrances.
Après que vous aurez souffert un peu de temps,
le Dieu de toute grâce,
lui qui, dans le Christ Jésus, vous a appelés à sa gloire éternelle,
vous rétablira lui-même,
vous affermira, vous fortifiera,
vous rendra inébranlables.
À lui la souveraineté pour les siècles. Amen.

pour vous exhorter,
et pour attester que c’est vraiment dans la grâce de Dieu
que vous tenez ferme.
La communauté qui est à Babylone, choisie comme vous par Dieu,
vous salue,
ainsi que Marc, mon fils.
Saluez-vous les uns les autres par un baiser fraternel.
Paix à vous tous, qui êtes dans le Christ.
ÉVANGILE DU JOUR
Évangile de Jésus Christ selon saint Marc
(Mc 16, 15-20)
En ce temps-là,
Jésus ressuscité se manifesta aux onze Apôtres et leur dit :
« Allez dans le monde entier.
Proclamez l’Évangile à toute la création.
Celui qui croira et sera baptisé
sera sauvé ;
celui qui refusera de croire
sera condamné.
Voici les signes qui accompagneront
ceux qui deviendront croyants :
en mon nom, ils expulseront les démons ;
ils parleront en langues nouvelles ;
ils prendront des serpents dans leurs mains
et, s’ils boivent un poison mortel,
il ne leur fera pas de mal ;
ils imposeront les mains aux malades,
et les malades s’en trouveront bien. »
Le Seigneur Jésus,
après leur avoir parlé,
fut enlevé au ciel
et s’assit à la droite de Dieu.
Quant à eux,
ils s’en allèrent proclamer partout l’Évangile.
Le Seigneur travaillait avec eux
et confirmait la Parole par les signes qui l’accompagnaient.
PAROLES DU SAINT PÈRE
Il s’agit d’une mission sans fin – c’est-à-dire littéralement sans frontière – qui dépasse les forces humaines. Jésus, en effet, dit : “Allez dans le monde entier. Proclamez l’Évangile à toute la création” (Mc 16,15). La tâche que Jésus à un petit groupe d’hommes simples et sans grandes capacité intellectuelles semble vraiment trop audacieux ! Pourtant, cette compagnie peu nombreuse, sans importance face aux grands puissances de ce monde, est envoyée porter le message d’amour et de miséricorde de Jésus aux quatre coins de la Terre.
