PRIMERA LECTURA
No lograban hacer frente a la sabiduría y al espíritu con que hablaba.
Lectura del libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles 6, 8-15
En aquellos días, Esteban, lleno de gracia y poder, realizaba grandes prodigios y signos en medio del pueblo. Unos cuantos de la sinagoga llamada de los libertos, oriundos de Cirene, Alejandría, Cilicia y Asia, se pusieron a discutir con Esteban; pero no lograban hacer frente a la sabiduría y al espíritu con que hablaba.
Entonces indujeron a unos que asegurasen:
«Le hemos oído palabras blasfemas contra Moisés y contra Dios».
Alborotaron al pueblo, a los ancianos y a los escribas, y viniendo de improviso, lo agarraron y lo condujeron al Sanedrin, presentando testigos falsos que decían:
«Este individuo no para de hablar contra el Lugar Santo y la Ley, pues le hemos oído decir que ese Jesús el Nazareno destruirá este lugar y cambiará las tradiciones que nos dio Moisés».
Todos los que estaban sentados en el Sanedrin fijaron su mirada en él y su rostro les pareció el de un ángel.
Palabra de Dios.
Sal 118, 23-24. 26-27. 29-30
R. Dichoso el que camina en la voluntad del Señor.
Aunque los nobles se sienten a murmurar de mí,
tu siervo medita tus decretos;
tus preceptos son mi delicia,
tus enseñanzas son mis consejeros. R.
Te expliqué mi camino, y me escuchaste:
enséñame tus mandamientos;
instrúyeme en el camino de tus mandatos,
y meditaré tus maravillas. R.
Apártame del camino falso,
y dame la gracia de tu ley;
escogí el camino verdadero,
deseé tus mandamientos. R.
Aleluya Mt 4, 4b
R. Aleluya, aleluya, aleluya.
No solo de pan vive el hombre,
sino de toda palabra que sale de la boca de Dios. R.
EVANGELIO
Trabajad no por el alimento que perece, sino por el que perdura para la vida eterna.
Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Juan 6, 22-29
Después de que Jesús hubo saciado a cinco mil hombres, sus discípulos lo vieron caminando sobre el mar.
Al día siguiente, la gente que se había quedado al otro lado del mar notó que allí no había habido más que una barca y que Jesús no había embarcado con sus discípulos, sino que sus discípulos se habían marchado solos.
Entretanto, unas barcas de Tiberíades llegaron cerca del sitio donde habían comido el pan después que el Señor había dado gracias. Cuando la gente vio que ni Jesús ni sus discípulos estaban allí, se embarcaron y fueron a Cafarnaún en busca de Jesús.
Al encontrarlo en la otra orilla del lago, le preguntaron:
«Maestro, ¿cuándo has venido aquí?»
Jesús les contestó:
«En verdad, en verdad os digo: me buscáis no porque habéis visto signos, sino porque comisteis pan hasta saciaros. Trabajad, no por el alimento que perece, sino por el alimento que perdura para la vida eterna, el que os dará el Hijo del hombre; pues a éste lo ha sellado el Padre, Dios».
Ellos le preguntaron:
«Y, ¿qué tenemos que hacer para realizar las obras de Dios?».
Respondió Jesús:
«La obra de Dios es Esta: que creáis en el que él ha enviado».

READING OF THE DAY
A reading from the Acts of the Apostles
ACTS 6:8-15
Stephen, filled with grace and power,
was working great wonders and signs among the people.
Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen,
Cyreneans, and Alexandrians,
and people from Cilicia and Asia,
came forward and debated with Stephen,
but they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke.
Then they instigated some men to say,
“We have heard him speaking blasphemous words
against Moses and God.”
They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes,
accosted him, seized him,
and brought him before the Sanhedrin.
They presented false witnesses who testified,
“This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law.
For we have heard him claim
that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place
and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.”
All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him
and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to John
JN 6:22-29
[After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.]
The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea
saw that there had been only one boat there,
and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat,
but only his disciples had left.
Other boats came from Tiberias
near the place where they had eaten the bread
when the Lord gave thanks.
When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there,
they themselves got into boats
and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus.
And when they found him across the sea they said to him,
“Rabbi, when did you get here?”
Jesus answered them and said,
“Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me
not because you saw signs
but because you ate the loaves and were filled.
Do not work for food that perishes
but for the food that endures for eternal life,
which the Son of Man will give you.
For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.”
So they said to him,
“What can we do to accomplish the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them,
“This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.”
WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
The Lord awakens us, with the witness of saints, with the testimony of martyrs who proclaim to us every day that travelling the path of Jesus is that of his mission: to proclaim the year of grace. The people understand Jesus’ rebuke and for this reason they ask Him: “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”. Jesus answered them: “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent”. In other words, faith in Him, in Him alone; trust in Him and not in other things that lead us in the end, far away from Him. “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent”.
