PRIMERA LECTURA
De pronto, un carro de fuego los separó, y subió Elías al cielo
Lectura del segundo libro de los Reyes 2. 1. 6-14
Cuando el Señor iba a arrebatar a Elías al cielo en la tempestad Elías y Elíseo partieron de Guilgal.
Llegaron a Jericó, y Elías dijo a Elíseo:
«Quédate aquí, porque el Señor me envía solo al Jordán».
Eliseo volvió a responder:
«¡Vive Dios! ¡Por tu vida, no te dejaré!» ; y los dos continuaron el camino.
Cincuenta hombres de la comunidad de los profetas iban también de camino y se pararon frente al río Jordán, a cierta distancia de Elías y Eliseo, los cuales se detuvieron a la vera del Jordán. Elías se quitó el manto, lo enrolló y golpeó con él las aguas. Se separaron estas a un lado y a otro, y pasaron ambos sobre terreno seco.
Mientras cruzaban, dijo Elías a Elíseo:
«Pídeme lo que quieras que haga por ti antes de que sea arrebatado de tu lado».
Eliseo respondió:
«Por favor, que yo reciba dos partes de tu espíritu».
Respondió Elías:
«Pides algo difícil, pero si alcanzas a verme cuando sea arrebatado de tu lado, pasarán a ti; si no no pasarán».
Mientras ellos iban conversando por el camino, de pronto, un carro de fuego con caballos de fuego los separó a uno del otro. Subió Elías al cielo en la tempestad.
Eliseo lo veía y clamaba:
«¡Padre mío, padre mío! ¡Carros y caballería de Israel!».
Al dejar de verlo, agarró sus vestidos y los desgarró en dos. Recogió el manto que había caído de los hombros de Elías, volvió al Jordán y se detuvo a la orilla. Tomó el manto que había caído de los hombros de Elías y golpeó con él las aguas, pero no se separaron.
Dijo entonces:
«¿Dónde está el Señor, el Dios de Elías?».
Golpeó otra vez las aguas, que se separaron a un lado y a otro, y pasó Eliseo sobre terreno seco.

R. Sed valientes de corazón, los que esperáis en el Señor.
Qué bondad tan grande, Señor,
reservas para tus fieles,
y concedes a los que a ti se acogen

Tu Padre, que ve en lo escondido, te recompensará
Lectura del santo Evangelio según san Mateo 6, 1-6- 16-18
En aquel tiempo, dijo Jesús a sus discípulos:
«Cuidad de no practicar vuestra justicia delante de los hombres para ser vistos por ellos; de lo contrario, no tenéis recompensa de vuestro Padre celestial. Por tanto, cuando hagas limosna, no mandes tocar la trompeta ante ti, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y por las calles para ser honrados por la gente; en verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando hagas limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace tu derecha; así tu limosna quedará en secreto y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te recompensará.
Cuando oréis, no seáis como los hipócritas, a quienes les gusta orar de pie en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las plazas, para que los vean los hombres. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su recompensa.
Tú, en cambio, cuando ores, entra en tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora a tu Padre, que está en lo secreto, y tu Padre, que ve en lo secreto, te lo recompensará.
Cuando ayunéis, no pongáis cara triste, como los hipócritas que desfiguran sus rostros para hacer ver a los hombres que ayunan. En verdad os digo que ya han recibido su paga.
Tú, en cambio, cuando ayunes, perfúmate la cabeza y lávate la cara, para que tu ayuno lo note, no los hombres, sino tu Padre que está en lo escondido; y tu Padre, que ve en lo escondido, te recompensará».

Esto fue lo que sucedió cuando el Señor iba a arrebatar a Elías en un remolino hacia el cielo. Ese día Elías y Eliseo habían salido de Guilgal. Al llegar a Jericó, Elías le dijo a Eliseo: “Quédate aquí, porque el Señor me envía al Jordán”. Respondió Eliseo: “Por Dios y por tu vida que no te dejaré ir solo”. Y se fueron los dos juntos.
Los acompañaban cincuenta hombres de la comunidad de los profetas, los cuales, al llegar Elías y Eliseo a la orilla del Jordán, se detuvieron a cierta distancia de ellos. Elías tomó su manto, lo enrolló y con él golpeó las aguas; éstas se separaron a un lado y a otro, y ambos pasaron el río sin mojarse.
Después de cruzar, Elías le dijo a Eliseo: “Pídeme lo que quieras que haga por ti, antes de que sea arrebatado de tu lado”. Respondió Eliseo: “Que sea el heredero principal de tu espíritu”. Le dijo Elías: “Es difícil lo que pides; pero si alcanzas a verme, cuando sea arrebatado de tu lado, lo obtendrás; si no, no lo obtendrás”.
Siguieron caminando y conversando, cuando un carro de fuego, con caballos de fuego, se interpuso entre ellos, y Elías subió al cielo en un remolino. Eliseo lo veía alejarse y le gritaba: “¡Padre mío, padre mío, carro y auriga de Israel!”
Y ya no lo volvió a ver. Entonces se rasgó las vestiduras, recogió el manto que se le había caído a Elías, regresó y se detuvo en la orilla del Jordán. Tomó el manto de Elías y golpeó con él las aguas, y no se separaron. Entonces dijo: “¿Dónde está el Señor, el Dios de Elías?” Volvió a golpear las aguas y entonces se separaron a un lado y a otro, y pasó Eliseo.
EVANGELIO DEL DÍA
Evangelio según san Mateo
Mt 6, 1-6. 16-18
En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “Tengan cuidado de no practicar sus obras de piedad delante de los hombres para que los vean. De lo contrario, no tendrán recompensa con su Padre celestial.
Por lo tanto, cuando des limosna, no lo anuncies con trompeta, como hacen los hipócritas en las sinagogas y por las calles, para que los alaben los hombres. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando des limosna, que no sepa tu mano izquierda lo que hace la derecha, para que tu limosna quede en secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará.
Cuando ustedes hagan oración, no sean como los hipócritas, a quienes les gusta orar de pie en las sinagogas y en las esquinas de las plazas, para que los vea la gente. Yo les aseguro que ya recibieron su recompensa. Tú, en cambio, cuando vayas a orar, entra en tu cuarto, cierra la puerta y ora ante tu Padre, que está allí, en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará.

Tú, en cambio, cuando ayunes, perfúmate la cabeza y lávate la cara, para que no sepa la gente que estás ayunando, sino tu Padre, que está en lo secreto; y tu Padre, que ve lo secreto, te recompensará’’.
PALABRAS DEL SANTO PADRE
Cuando hacemos algo bueno, a veces estamos tentados de ser apreciados y de tener una recompensa: la gloria humana. Pero es una falsa recompensa porque nos proyecta hacia lo que los demás piensan de nosotros. Jesús nos pide que hagamos el bien porque es bien. Nos pide que nos sintamos siempre bajo la mirada de nuestro Padre celestial y que vivamos en relación con Él, no en relación con el juicio de los demás. Vivir en la presencia del Padre es una alegría mucho más profunda que la gloria mundana. A reading from the Second Book of Kings
2 KGS 2:1, 6-14
When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to heaven in a whirlwind,
he and Elisha were on their way from Gilgal.
Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here;
the LORD has sent me on to the Jordan.”
“As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live,
I will not leave you,” Elisha replied.
And so the two went on together.
Fifty of the guild prophets followed and
when the two stopped at the Jordan,
they stood facing them at a distance.
Elijah took his mantle, rolled it up
and struck the water, which divided,
and both crossed over on dry ground.
When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha,
“Ask for whatever I may do for you, before I am taken from you.”
Elisha answered, “May I receive a double portion of your spirit.”
“You have asked something that is not easy,” Elijah replied.
“Still, if you see me taken up from you,
your wish will be granted; otherwise not.”
As they walked on conversing,
a flaming chariot and flaming horses came between them,
and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
When Elisha saw it happen he cried out,
“My father! my father! Israel’s chariots and drivers!”
But when he could no longer see him,
Elisha gripped his own garment and tore it in two.
Then he picked up Elijah’s mantle that had fallen from him,
and went back and stood at the bank of the Jordan.
Wielding the mantle that had fallen from Elijah,
Elisha struck the water in his turn and said,
“Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?”
When Elisha struck the water it divided and he crossed over.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Matthew
MT 6:1-6, 16-18
Jesus said to his disciples:
“Take care not to perform righteous deeds
in order that people may see them;
otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.
When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you,
as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets
to win the praise of others.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you give alms,
do not let your left hand know what your right is doing,
so that your almsgiving may be secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites,
who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners
so that others may see them.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door,
and pray to your Father in secret.
And your Father who sees in secret will repay you.
“When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites.
They neglect their appearance,
so that they may appear to others to be fasting.
Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.
But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,
so that you may not appear to others to be fasting,
except to your Father who is hidden.
And your Father who sees what is hidden will repay you.”
WORDS OF THE HOLY FATHER
When we do something good, at times we are tempted to be appreciated and to seek compensation: human glory. But it is a false compensation because it projects us toward what others think of us. Jesus asks us to do Good for the sake of the Good. He asks us to be aware that we are always under the gaze of the Heavenly Father and to live in relation to him, not in relation to the judgement of others. Living in the presence of the Father is a far more profound joy than worldly glory. (Video message “Keep Lent”, Ash Wednesday, 10 February 2016)
