READING OF THE DAY
A reading from the Book of Micah
MI 2:1-5
Woe to those who plan iniquity,
and work out evil on their couches;
In the morning light they accomplish it
when it lies within their power.
They covet fields, and seize them;
houses, and they take them;
They cheat an owner of his house,
a man of his inheritance.
Therefore thus says the LORD:
Behold, I am planning against this race an evil
from which you shall not withdraw your necks;
Nor shall you walk with head high,
for it will be a time of evil.
On that day a satire shall be sung over you,
and there shall be a plaintive chant:
“Our ruin is complete,
our fields are portioned out among our captors,
The fields of my people are measured out,
and no one can get them back!”
Thus you shall have no one
to mark out boundaries by lot
in the assembly of the LORD.
From the Gospel according to Matthew
MT 12:14-21
The Pharisees went out and took counsel against Jesus
to put him to death.
When Jesus realized this, he withdrew from that place.
Many people followed him, and he cured them all,
but he warned them not to make him known.
This was to fulfill what had been spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
Behold, my servant whom I have chosen,
my beloved in whom I delight;
I shall place my Spirit upon him,
and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles.
He will not contend or cry out,
nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
a smoldering wick he will not quench,
until he brings justice to victory.
And in his name the Gentiles will hope.

LECTURA DEL DÍA
Miq 2, 1-5
¡Ay de aquellos que planean injusticias,
que traman el mal durante la noche
y al despuntar la mañana, lo ejecutan,
porque son gente poderosa!
Codician los campos y los roban,
codician las casas y las usurpan,
violando todos los derechos
arruinan al hombre y lo despojan de su herencia.
Por eso dice el Señor:
“Estoy planeando contra esta gente
una serie de calamidades
de las que no podrán escapar.
Entonces ya no caminarán con altivez,
porque será un tiempo de desgracias.
Aquel día, la gente se burlará de ellos
y les cantará un triste canto:
Nos han despojado de todo
y se han repartido nuestras tierras;
se han apoderado de nuestra herencia
y no hay quien nos la devuelva”.
Por eso dice el Señor:
“Cuando la asamblea del pueblo
distribuya nuevamente las tierras,
no habrá parte para ellos”.
EVANGELIO DEL DÍA
Mt 12, 14-21
En aquel tiempo, los fariseos se confabularon contra Jesús para acabar con él. Al saberlo, Jesús se retiró de ahí. Muchos lo siguieron y él curó a todos los enfermos y les mandó enérgicamente que no lo publicaran, para que se cumplieran las palabras del profeta Isaías:
Miren a mi siervo, a quien sostengo;
a mi elegido, en quien tengo mis complacencias.
En él he puesto mi Espíritu,
para que haga brillar la justicia sobre las naciones.
No gritará ni clamará,
no hará oír su voz en las plazas,
no romperá la caña resquebrajada,
ni apagará la mecha que aún humea,
hasta que haga triunfar la justicia sobre la tierra;
y en él pondrán todas las naciones su esperanza.
PALABRAS DEL SANTO PADRE
La misión de salvación de Jesús es una misión caracterizada por un estilo, el estilo del siervo humilde y dócil, dotado sólo de la fuerza de la verdad, como había profetizado Isaías: «no vociferará ni alzará el tono, […] la caña quebrada no romperá, y la mecha mortecina no apagará. Lealmente hará justicia» (42, 2-3). Siervo humilde y manso, he aquí el estilo de Jesús, y también el estilo misionero de los discípulos de Cristo: anunciar el Evangelio con docilidad y firmeza, sin gritar, sin regañar a nadie, sino con docilidad y firmeza, sin arrogancia o imposición.
