READING OF THE DAY
A reading from the Letter of St Paul to the Romans
Rom 9:1-5
Brothers and sisters:
I speak the truth in Christ, I do not lie;
my conscience joins with the Holy Spirit in bearing me witness
that I have great sorrow and constant anguish in my heart.
For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ
for the sake of my own people,
my kindred according to the flesh.
They are children of Israel;
theirs the adoption, the glory, the covenants,
the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises;
theirs the patriarchs, and from them,
according to the flesh, is the Christ,
who is over all, God blessed forever. Amen.
GOSPEL OF THE DAY
From the Gospel according to Luke
Lk 14:1-6
On a sabbath Jesus went to dine
at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,
and the people there were observing him carefully.
In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy.
Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking,
“Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?”
But they kept silent; so he took the man and,
after he had healed him, dismissed him.
Then he said to them
“Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern,
would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?”
But they were unable to answer his question.

LECTURA DEL DÍA
De la Carta de Pablo a los Romanos 9, 1-5
Hermanos: Les hablo con toda verdad en Cristo; no miento. Mi conciencia me atestigua, con la luz del Espíritu Santo, que tengo una infinita tristeza y un dolor incesante tortura mi corazón.
Hasta aceptaría verme separado de Cristo, si esto fuera para bien de mis hermanos, los de mi raza y de mi sangre, los israelitas, a quienes pertenecen la adopción filial, la gloria, la alianza, la ley, el culto, las promesas. Ellos son descendientes de los patriarcas; y de su raza, según la carne, nació Cristo, el cual está por encima de todo y es Dios bendito por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
EVANGELIO DEL DÍA
Evangelio según Lucas 14, 1-6
Un sábado, Jesús fue a comer en casa de uno de los jefes de los fariseos, y éstos estaban espiándolo. Había allí, frente a él, un enfermo de hidropesía, y Jesús, dirigiéndose a los escribas y fariseos, les preguntó: “¿Está permitido curar en sábado o no?”
Ellos se quedaron callados. Entonces Jesús tocó con la mano al enfermo, lo curó y le dijo que se fuera. Y dirigiéndose a ellos les preguntó: “Si a alguno de ustedes se le cae en un pozo su burro o su buey, ¿no lo saca enseguida, aunque sea sábado?” Y ellos no supieron qué contestarle.
