The demonstratives

The demonstratives are a group of deictic elements (determiners, pronouns and adverbs) that allow to locate something in the space or in the time, and they indicate the distance in regards to the speaker and the listener.
The can function as determiners or as pronouns.
When they function as determiners, they accompany a noun and make reference to a concrete reality.
If they are pronouns, they replace the noun to which they make reference.

USES

 

Este corresponds to the person, animal or object that is nearer to the subject. Ese corresponds to the person, animal or object that is located at a medium distance of the subject. Aquel corresponds to the person, animal or object that is further from the subject. The pronouns have the same gender and number as the noun to which they make reference: Esta es la nueva casa de María The neuter pronouns have no plural: Yo no entiendo esto, ¿puede explicarmelo? The demonstrative determiners are placed before the noun: Mira, ese reloj es igual que el que trajo Ana de París
