Le personnage le plus sympa et le plus généreux de Madrid, connu partout en Espagne, c’est, sans aucun doute, le Ratoncito Pérez. Lorsqu’on était des enfants, on a tous reçu la visite de cette souris.

The Ratoncito Pérez is one of the most generous and likeable characters from Madrid. It is well-known in the whole country. Every child has sometime received the visit of this mouse.
The Ratón Pérez appears only when a child lose a milk tooth. The child has to put the tooth under the pillow, and then, the Ratón Pérez takes the tooth and leaves a coin for the kid.
This character was created around the end of 19th century by the Jesuit Luis Coloma. The Royal House asked father Coloma to write a short story for Don Alfonso XIII, who was eight by that time. In the story there is a boy named Bubi, who actually is Alfonso XIII. His mother, Maria Christina of Bourbon, used to call him by this nickname.
The Ratón Pérez lived in a biscuit box, at the Carlos Prast’s shop, which was a patisserie located at calle Arenal. Nowadays, this patisserie does not exist. In its place there is a shoe and sports clothing store. However, a plaque commemorating the house of the Ratón Pérez remains in the wall. Surely, we have gone past the place a lot of times but we have never noticed the plaque.

El Ratón Pérez sólo aparece cuando a un niño se le cae un diente de leche y el niño, al irse a la cama, deja su diente bajo la almohada, es entonces cuando aparece el Ratón Pérez, que se lleva el diente y en su lugar deja una moneda.
Este “personaje” fue creado a finales del XIX por el jesuita, Luis Coloma. La Casa Real pidió al padre Coloma que escribiese un cuento para don Alfonso XIII que en aquella época tenía unos ocho años. En el cuento hay un niño que se llama Bubi, que no es otro que el rey Alfonso XIII, Bubi es como le llamaba su madre la reina Doña María Cristina.
El Ratón Pérez vivía en una caja de galletas en la tienda de Carlos Prast, una pastelería situada en la calle Arenal. Hoy ya no existe la pastelería, en su lugar hay una tienda de zapatos y ropa deportiva y una placa. Seguramente hemos pasado cientos de veces por este lugar y nunca nos hemos fijado en la placa que recuerda el lugar donde vivía el Ratón Pérez.
