  Greetings and goodbyes

  The most common greeting in Spanish is “hola”,to which the recipient can also answer with “hola”, and add some courtesy sentence, such as “¿Qué tal estás?” or “¿Cómo estás?”.

  In order to say goodbye, expressions like “adiós”, “hasta luego”, “hasta la vista”, “nos vemos”, are commonly used.

  The usual courtesy expressions are: “por favor” to ask for something and “gracias” or “muchas gracias” when the recipient has replied us or given us what we have asked for.

  As a courtesy, it is frequent to greet with “buenos días, tardes or noches”, depending on the time of the day. The word “mañana” (morning) is implied in “día” (day), so in Spanish we never say “las buenas mañanas”,but “buenos días”.

  When answering the phone we say “¿Diga?” which is the abbreviated form of “¿Dígame?”. The person who calls has to ask for the person he wants to talk to: “¿Se puede poner…?”. On the other hand, first of all, the emitter identifies himself: “Soy Pedro García, ¿Se puede poner (al teléfono) X…?”.
